Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has taken a significant step towards protecting intellectual freedom by signing a groundbreaking bill into law. Under this new legislation, Illinois becomes the first state in the United States to prohibit book bans. Starting from January 1, 2024, any public library in Illinois that restricts or bans materials based on "partisan or doctrinal" disapproval will lose eligibility for state funding. This move ensures that libraries remain inclusive spaces for diverse ideas and viewpoints, allowing individuals to access a wide range of literature without censorship.
